Acre, decimal and hectare converter

1 acre = 100 decimal = 43,560 sq ft. Exact maths, runs only in your browser.

Ask a seller in Bhubaneswar or a farmer in Balasore how big a plot is and you will usually hear "decimal". Read the rakba (ରକବା, area) column on a Bhulekh khatiyan and you will see acre, decimal (written ଡି.) and hectare. Builders quote square feet. The sub-registrar's valuation tool accepts all of these and a couple more.

The good news: the units on the RoR and the IGR tool are standard ones, linked by fixed arithmetic. Once you know that 1 acre = 100 decimal, everything else follows. To convert a specific figure, use the converter at the top of this page. The tables below are for quick reading and for checking a deed or valuation by hand.

    The core conversions (exact)

An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, and a foot is exactly 0.3048 metre. That makes 1 acre exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres. A decimal is one hundredth of an acre.

Unit Square feet Square metres Acre Decimal
    1 acre (ଏକର) 43,560 4,046.8564224 1 100
    1 decimal (ଡି.) 435.6 40.468564224 0.01 1
    1 hectare (ହେକ୍ଟର) 107,639.104 10,000 2.4710538 247.10538
    1 square metre 10.7639104 1 0.000247105 0.0247105
    1 square foot 1 0.09290304 0.0000229568 0.00229568

Handy rounded figures: 1 decimal is about 435.6 sq ft or 40.47 sq m; 1 hectare is about 2.471 acres; 1 acre is about 0.4047 hectare.

Decimal to square feet and square metres

Plots are often quoted in decimals. Multiply decimals by 435.6 for square feet, or by 40.468564224 for square metres.

    How to convert by hand

    1. Write the area and its unit exactly as on the paper, for example "0.125 Ac" or "12.5 dec".
    2. Bring it to decimals first. Acre to decimal: multiply by 100. Hectare to decimal: multiply by 247.10538.
    3. Decimal to square feet: multiply by 435.6. Decimal to square metres: multiply by 40.468564224.
    4. Going the other way, square feet to decimal: divide by 435.6. Square metres to decimal: divide by 40.468564224.
    5. Round only at the end. Rounding halfway, especially with hectares, can shift the answer by several square feet.

    Example: a khatiyan shows 0.0810 hectare. 0.0810 x 247.10538 = 20.0155 decimal (about 20.02), which is about 8,719 sq ft (20.0155 x 435.6).

Reading area on a Bhulekh khatiyan

On the RoR back page, the plot table has a rakba (ରକବା) column split into ଏକର (acre), ଡି. (decimal) and ହେକ୍ଟର (hectare). Two practical points:

    • The acre and decimal parts are usually read together: for example, 0 in the acre part and 12 in the decimal part means 12 decimals, which is 0.12 acre (check how your copy writes it).
    • The hectare figure is the same area in metric. If it does not roughly match the acre figure times 0.4047, check the plot row again or ask the tahasil.

Our guides to the Odisha khatiyan and plot details on Bhulekh show where the column sits. Terms like ରକବା and ଡି. are also listed in our Odia land record terms page.

The 100-decimal and 1000-decimal acre on IGR

The IGR Odisha benchmark valuation tool asks you to pick a unit. Its options are Acre, Hectare, "Decimal (100D=1Acre)", "Decimal (1000D=1Acre)", Sq Meter and Sq Feet. So besides the usual decimal (one hundredth of an acre), the tool also accepts a finer unit where 1,000 parts make an acre.

IGR unit Size of one unit Square feet
    Decimal (100D=1Acre) 1/100 acre 435.6
    Decimal (1000D=1Acre) 1/1000 acre 43.56

Choosing the wrong one makes the benchmark value ten times too high or too low. If your deed says "12.5 decimal", that is normally the 100D unit; confirm against the acre figure. Our Odisha land valuation guide covers the rest of the tool.

What about guntha, bigha and other units?

You will see guntha in many online converters. A guntha is commonly taken as 1/40 acre (1,089 sq ft), but it is used mainly in other states. It does not appear on any official Odisha page we checked, including the RoR and the IGR valuation tool. Do not treat it as an Odisha record unit, and do not convert a khatiyan figure into guntha for official use.

Older local units, such as bigha or guntha in sale talk, have no single value across India. If an old document uses a local unit, ask the tahasil office or a licensed surveyor how it maps to the acre and decimal in the current RoR.

When the area on paper and ground differ

A conversion only changes units. It cannot tell you whether the plot on the ground matches the record. If a fence encloses more or less than the RoR area, check the shape on Bhunaksha Odisha and consider a demarcation. The Odisha Revenue Services fee table lists "Demarcation (For Private Individual)" at Rs 800 per plot.

    Frequently asked questions

1 decimal is equal to how many square feet in Odisha?

One decimal is one hundredth of an acre, so it equals 435.6 square feet, or about 40.47 square metres. This is the same decimal shown as ଡି. in the area column of an Odisha khatiyan and listed as Decimal (100D=1Acre) on the IGR valuation tool.

How many decimals make 1 acre in Odisha?

100 decimals make 1 acre. So 25 decimals is a quarter acre and 50 decimals is half an acre. The IGR valuation tool also offers a finer unit where 1,000 parts make an acre, so check which one you select when you calculate a benchmark value.

1 hectare kitne decimal hota hai?

1 hectare lagbhag 247.1 decimal hota hai, yaani 2.471 acre. Exact figure 247.10538 decimal hai. Khatiyan mein hectare aur acre-decimal dono likhe hote hain, isliye dono ko milakar check karna aasaan hai. Decimal ko square feet mein badalne ke liye 435.6 se guna kariye.

Is guntha used in Odisha land records?

No official Odisha page we checked uses guntha. The RoR shows acre, decimal and hectare, and the IGR tool offers acre, hectare, two kinds of decimal, square metre and square foot. Guntha is commonly taken as 1/40 acre elsewhere, but do not use it for Odisha records.

How do I convert square feet to decimal?

Divide the square feet by 435.6. For example, 2,400 sq ft divided by 435.6 is about 5.51 decimal. To go from square metres, divide by 40.468564224. Round only at the end so the result stays accurate.

Why does the hectare figure on my RoR look different from the acre figure?

They are the same area in two systems. Multiply the acre figure by about 0.4047 to get hectares. Small differences come from rounding. If the gap is large, recheck that you are reading the right plot row, then ask the tahasil office.
